There is a USB port on the back of my receiver, I can connect to the USB port on my HD and if so, what would happen?

USB’s transfer rate is not high enough to support HDTV. Your basic cable box is not capable of transceiving HD signal, it needs to be digital at least.
Get an HD or Digital box, and you can get HDTV.

Depends on the box. Also a usb cable won’t work because I’d be very surprised if it had one. A HDMI connection on the other hand would work and they should be at least in the TV and on most boxes. It looks a lot like a USB connection. Unless there are free HD channels though you won’t get a true HD picture but it’d still be a good one.

Nothing.
First, USB is a host/client system. The TV and the cable box are hosts.
Second, the USB port on the cable box is not enabled.

Most likely nothing. The USB port on the TV is there for displaying digital still pictures from a flash memory stick, and/or performing firmware updates. The USB port on the cable box is probably *only* for firmware updates.
